Thomas Jefferson came up short in its bid to repeat as PIAA Class AA boys' soccer champions. But one of the Jaguars' players had a repeat performance.
For the second consecutive season, Thomas Jefferson senior Rich Costanzo is the Post-Gazette Boys' Soccer Player of the Year. The award considers all players in the WPIAL and City League.
A 5-foot-9 Penn State recruit, Costanzo also was also named an All-American for the second consecutive season, after scoring 37 goals and adding 32 assists. Costanzo set the Thomas Jefferson school record with 107 career goals.
"He's fast with great skills," said Coach Mike Kulish of Costanzo, who was a four-year starter. "He's a great competitor and keeps everyone on their toes."
Costanzo is the leader of this year's Post-Gazette All-Area Team. Here's a look at the other 11 players:
Evan Browne, Thomas Jefferson -- A three-year starter who scored 32 goals and added 14 assists for the WPIAL and PIAA Class AA runner-up Jaguars. Had a stellar season despite being hampered by a right ankle injury for much of the year.
Nick Christy, Shaler -- A 5-foot-7 speedy senior forward who led the Titans to a 19-2-1 season and a spot in the WPIAL quarterfinals. Christy finished with 27 goals and 11 assists. A three-year starter who had 61 career goals, this is Christy's second year on the All-Area team.
John DelGreco, Baldwin -- A Robert Morris recruit, DelGreco led Baldwin to a 16-4-1 record and a trip to the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. This senior midfielder netted three hat tricks and finished this season with 22 goals.
Pat Kerr, Mt. Lebanon -- A senior midfielder/defender, Kerr has committed to Pitt. He played strictly defense in the final 16 games of the season and the Blue Devils surrendered just six goals in that span on their way to the WPIAL and PIAA semifinals.
Matt Langton, Mt. Lebanon -- A senior midfielder, Langton scored 17 goals and had 24 assists. This is his second appearance on the PG's All-Area team.
Travis MacKenzie, Chartiers Valley -- A Duquesne recruit and four-year starter, he led the Colts to a 13-5-1 record and the WPIAL playoffs. Alternating between defense and forward, he still managed to score 16 goals this season.
Jordan Marks, Peters Township -- An imposing figure in goal at 6 feet 3, Marks led Peters Township to a 21-3 record and it's first WPIAL Class AAA title this season. He posted 15 shutouts and had a 0.52 goals-against average.
Brian Midock, Fox Chapel -- A senior, he anchored a defense that helped the Foxes earn a trip to the WPIAL final. Fox Chapel allowed just six goals while posting 17 shutouts. He was a four-year starter and is a two-time selection to the All-Area team.
John Morihlatko, Moon -- A junior left-footed forward, he led the Tigers to a 21-2-3 record and their first WPIAL title since 1990. Morihlatko scored 40 goals, netted six hat tricks and had 13 assists.
Evan Picard, Pine-Richland -- A senior forward, Picard scored eight game-winning goals for a Rams team that went 17-3-1 and earned a spot in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals. A three-year starter and two-time All-Area pick, he finished with 21 goals and three assists.
Ted Sheedy, Fox Chapel -- A two-year starter at goalkeeper who led the Foxes to a 21-2 record and 17 shutouts this season. This senior finished his career with a 40-5 mark and a school-record 32 shutouts.
